This is a peptide that mimics Pannexin-1 (Panx1), a membrane protein that enables intercellular communication via gap junction-like connections. Panx1 overexpression in two adjacent oocytes or mammalian epithelial cell lines allows for the passage of dyes. When Panx1 is blocked in macrophages that naturally express the ATP-gated P2X7 receptor (P2X7R), initial dye uptake is prevented, but not the ionic current. The blocking of Panx1 also inhibits the processing and release of interleukin-1α (IL-1α) upon P2X7R activation.
